Biodiesel, Ethanol & Bio Diesel developments in the UK

Biodiesel Resources in the UK

  • Wikipedia- Somewhat technical article: “Biodiesel refers to a non-petroleum-based diesel fuel consisting of short chain alkyl (methyl or ethyl) esters, made by transesterification of vegetable oil or animal fat (tallow), which can be used (alone, or blended with conventional petrodiesel) in unmodified diesel-engine vehicles.”
  • BioDiesel Filling Stations- A list of UK outlets and filling stations selling 5% and 95% biodiesel – categorised by county with maps, addresses and contact details for each outlet.
  • Green Fuels Ltd- Europe’s largest biodiesel equipment supplier of ‘home brew’ and commercial biodiesel production kits.
  • REA- The Renewable Energy Association represent British renewable energy producers and promote the use of sustainable energy in UK. Small section dedicated to biofuels.
  • University of Strathclyde – Energy Systems Research Unit’s Web site, course materials and software for students and practitioners interested in building energy efficiency and new and renewable energy systems deployment.

  • Green Fuel Challenge- One man’s quest to influence government policy on sustainable fuel. His 2001 paper concludes: “Biodiesel is the second most practical alternative fuel. Production methods are fully developed and the fuel may be used in existing, unmodified engines.”
  • LILI- The Low Impact Living Initiative is a non-profit organisation designed to help people reduce the impact they have on the environment. The web site contains a good overview of biodiesel, and they also run courses on how to make it.
  • The Renewable Energy Centre – UK based portal dealing with a wide range of subjects related to renewable energy sources.
  • Biodiesel Warehouse- On online shop for all kinds of biodiesel equipment, mainly aimed at the ‘home-brew’ market in the UK.
  • HSE- Health & Safety Executive information regarding the domestic production of biodiesel: “There are recipes available on the Internet for domestic production of biodiesel. These usually involve mixing vegetable oil with methanol and sodium hydroxide (also known as caustic soda or lye) but other hazardous materials are sometimes used.”
  • The Green Car Website- Good overview of biofuels – advantages and disadvantages.
  • Schnews- Beginners guide on how to make your first litre of biodiesel.
  • Biofuels news- Great biodiesel glossary from a leading specialist magazine in the market aimed at those who wish to learn and be kept abreast of all matters biodiesel, bioethanol, and biomass. Free download of a sample issue
  • Guardian Newspaper- Article: “Elliott, 79, is part of a cottage industry of people who have turned to making their own recycled “biodiesel” in response to the doubling of fuel prices in just over a year. Companies making biodiesel “reactors” report booming sales and demand for cheaper diesel is outstripping anything they can produce,”
  • Guardian Newspaper- Article presenting the other side of the argument: “The most destructive crop on earth is no solution to the energy crisis. By promoting biodiesel as a substitute, we have missed the fact that it is worse than the fossil-fuel burning it replaces.”

  • Biofuel Watch- Voluntary organisation campaigning for an EU moratorium on agrofuels from large-scale monocultures. Agroenergy monocultures are linked to accelerated climate change, deforestation, the impoverishment and dispossession of local communities, bio-diversity losses, human rights abuses, water and soil degradation, loss of food sovereignty and food security.”
  • Automobile Association- Biodiesel and Bioethanol information and advice from AA Public Affairs.
  • Eco Biodiesel- Commercial producer of biodiesel in Lancashire who say: “Biodiesel provides a perfect ecological balance when used as a fuel and is considered to be near carbon neutral and does not interfere with the carbon cycle and cause climate change
  • Argent Energy- Operators of a commercial biodiesel plant near Motherwell in Scotland producing 50 million litres of biodiesel per annum. Good FAQ on many aspects of biodiesel.
  • Goat Industries- A very active biodiesel forum from a ‘home-brew’ equipment supplier.
  • Pure Fuels- Commercial biofuel producer operating a waste oil collection service and forecourt-style biodiesel pumps.
  • Golden fuels- A workers co-op making and distributing biodiesel in the Oxford area since 2003. Also offering comprehensive training courses, consultancy, a book and small scale biodiesel reactors.
